  17. <p>    In the country's first presidential election in 29 years,
  18. Brazil's 82 million voters last week behaved as forecast. They
  19. withheld an absolute majority from any of the 21 contenders,
  20. opening the way to a second round of voting on Dec. 17 to
  21. choose between the two front runners.

  23. <p>    As expected, the first-round leader was the crusading
  24. center-rightist Fernando Collor de Mello, a former state
  25. governor. At week's end, two candidates who split the leftist
  26. vote were deadlocked for the second slot: Luis Inacio Lula da
  27. Silva and Leonel Brizola.

  29. <p>    The wealthy Collor, 40, gained national attention by
  30. attacking his state's bureaucratic "maharajas." The radical
  31. socialist Lula, 44, left school after the eighth grade, became
  32. a lathe operator and entered union politics. The old-style
  33. populist Brizola, 67, was once governor of Rio de Janeiro state.
